RAINBOW CHEFS STRIVES TO EMPOWER AND EDUCATE YOUTHS IN NUTRITION THROUGH CULINARY ARTS:

photoTwo years ago Lana Elgart (mom) and Gabby Grinberg (daughter) set out to fight the ever-increasing epidemics of childhood obesity and diabetes. They founded Rainbow Chefs, a nutrition education and culinary arts program, to begin working on their mission. The goal was to teach as many children and teens as possible about healthy eating and nutrition through the exciting world of Culinary Arts. The standards-based classes and programs concentrate on nutrition education, healthy cooking and baking, and meal planning. To date Rainbow Chefs has taught over 20,000 children and teens throughout the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego. It is the only standards based (ATLAS in California) curriculum focused on nutrition and the culinary arts. Today, Rainbow Chefs is at the cusp of major expansion. Due to the ever-growing demand for their program, they have decided to start to an IndieGoGo campaign to reach out to the public to help them expand their mission (igg.me/at/rainbowchefs)!

Rainbow Chefs is striving to have health and nutrition education incorporated in to the foundational curriculum of all children. So far, they have signed four California-based school districts to incorporate their curriculums into the classroom and provide enrichment programs to over 1,500 schools.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE:

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. (cdc.gov)

In 2012, more than 1/3 of children and adolescents were overweight or obese (cdc.gov)

Kids at the age of 12 are getting adult-onset diabetes. (Dr. Howard Shapiro)

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases among children in the US. About 150,000 young people under 18 years have diabetes. (cdc.gov)

Children who develop type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes are typically overweight or obese. (cdc.gov)

WHO THEY ARE:

Lana is a mother of three, a true health nut, and has spent decades cooking healthy meals for everyone around. She has spent the last 17 years enriching the lives of children in her community. She ran a kids homework club for over six years, an art school which had music and dance classes and hosted more than 200 students, and was an active mom in each of her girls’ classrooms.  Lana has spent the past several years alongside a registered dietician developing the standards-based curriculum that is the foundation of Rainbow Chefs.

Gabby grew up knowing only healthy, homemade meals – so when her mom approached her with this idea, she jumped right in. Today, Gabby is attending law school and juggles her schoolwork, working as a legal intern, and being behind the scenes for Rainbow Chefs. She plays a behind-the-scenes role in the business, focusing on developing and maintaining the Rainbow Chefs brand and assisting with business strategies and development.

Together with the help of their amazing support team, they have been able to build out a recognizable brand that continues to grow and help youth all over California. They empower their aspiring chefs to develop healthy eating habits, explore their creativity, and enjoy being in the kitchen. Now they need your help to continue, check out their IndieGoGo campaign launching Tuesday March 11, 204 – igg.me/at/rainbowchefs. Help in any way you can, even by spreading the info!
