Eating with the Seasons

radhishes2 So it’s sunny and 70 degrees here in the Bay Area and blustery blizzard time back East. I am confused,   growing  up in NYC, winter meant citrus, citrus and more citrus and maybe some broccoli or celery. We are spoiled here in California, but it doesn’t mean one should want to eat everything all year long. I broke down and bought some raspberries the other day and as my sons and I sat on the couch watching winter sports, gearing up for the Sochi Winter Olympics, we ate raspberries off our fingers… don’t get me wrong they were yummy and fun to ingest, but it felt wrong. When I go to the Farmer’s Market these days, I see a lot of greens, beets, citrus, radishes and some lingering persimmons, apples, pears and pomegranates. I try to eat with the seasons, enjoying the bounty fully of each particular season and right now it’s all about kale and radishes! My latest obsessions:

 Kale salad:

  • Strips of kale
  • Shallots
  • Sliced persimmon
  • Feta or ricotta salata cheese crumbled
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • A squeeze of lemon juice

My favorite these days –watermelon radishes thinly sliced on salads or alone on yummy whole grain bread with butter with a pinch of salt! My kids love this!
