Asqew Grill Review
Picture this: healthy, affordable fare on a stick!
by Darya Mead
Picture this, trying to explain the wordplay of a restaurant named Asqew Grill that dishes up kebabs on skewers, to a seven year old. Then add a complex definition for the term askew into the mix, and one might avoid the entire experience. Nonetheless, the idea of healthy, affordable fare on a stick seemed like a fun option on a cold San Francisco day. Located in Laurel Village, at 3415 California Street at Laurel, this Pac Heights eatery is a great find for family meals.
When ordering, asqew becomes a verb, and the menu advises you on ‘how to asqew’. First you pick a type of protein; cilantro lime chicken, marinated tofu, Thai salmon or a myriad of other mouth-watering options. Then you pick your sides or salad… because the skewers get lonely all by themselves. Citrus cous cous, jasmine coconut rice and grilled pear salad are on offer. Ingredients are all-natural and certified 100% all-natural chicken, beef, wild tuna, salmon and organic mixed greens are a welcome sight in what seems like a gourmet fast food joint.
- certified 100% all natural chicken
- certified 100% all natural beef
- wild tuna and salmon
- organic mixed greens
Ordering seems complicated initially, so make sure you have your order sewn up before you place it, to avoid the back and forth with your children. Maybe even step aside and let others go in front of you before hog the register.
There are special vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, healthy and happy hour menus.
- Gluten Free
- Happy Hour
- Another cool feature: Buy a unlimited 20.00 Gift Certificates for only 15.00! Great idea!
Apparently, the owner is a parent of a child with celiac disease, so great attention and care is paid to food ingredients and preparation. The kid’s menu is impressive and
younger set can choose a LIL SAILOR WILD ALASKAN SALMON SKEWER with tomato & broccoli over jasmine rice, a LIL TEXAN BBQ CHICKEN SKEWER with corn on the cob & mashed potatoes as well as other nutritious options. Kids eat free on Mondays, which is certainly a bonus. Kids meals are only $3.99 and include a drink; this is cheaper than a burrito!
The BBQ ribs were particularly mouth watering and the side portions are ideal for the kid crowd if you decide not to do the kids menu. It’s a change from the mac ‘n cheese, chicken strips, pizza routine and kids, when offered, love to try fun and new food options.
Ordering happens at the counter and you can choose from regular tables or high bar stool type seats. Locate yourself next to the cozy fire and the ambiance is amped a bit higher. Prices are moderate, and for the healthy, natural and unusual vittles a surprisingly good deal.
Asqew Grill has won a number of Bay Area awards including Best BBQ in the Bay Area, Zagats top 25 bang for your buck, Best cheap healthy food and SFBG best food on a stick. I’m not quite sure who might compete in the last category, perhaps
artisan corn dogs?
Near, California Pacific Medical Center and The JCCSF, this Asqew Grill is a good option after a swim or Doctors appointment. All in all, make a Monday date with your kids or keep it as a note to self: the Asqew grill is a pleasant change of food pace, a crowd pleaser, nutritious, fun and won’t break the bank.
There are three other Asqew locations in the Bay Area. In business since 1999, Asqew Grill now offers their yummy skewers and healthy sides in the Marina, the Haight and Emeryville, as well as a catering business.
